Virgin Mobile Launches New Tablet Flex Plans

by on September 16th, 2011

Today, Virgin Mobile launched a set of new flex data plans for tablets, including the iPad.

The four new plans are called “flex” because as you increase your data usage, the plan moves to the next tier with a new data amount. This is in contrast to plans that charge you a per MB overage fee for any data use above a specific allotment.

The four new flex data plans are:

  • 10MB or less: $5/month
  • 10MB to 250MB: $15/month
  • 250MB to 5GB: $35/month
  • 5GB or more: $0.015/MB per month

These plans are added alongside Virgin Mobile’s existing flex data offers:

  • 500MB: $25/month
  • 500MB to 5GB: $35/month
  • 5GB or more: $15/GB per month

Note that with the activation of the new plans (first list above), there is a one time $35 activation fee.

I purchased a ViginMobile Canada microSIM, installed, registered for the $5 FlexiPlan, but could never get an internet connection on my iPad 2 3G 64GB.

Spent a lot of time on the ‘phone with Virgin, 3 visits back to the Virgin kiosk where I bought the SIM, everyone trying to be helpful, but never a connection. Finally was told they’d move me up higher on the tech support and they would call me back. They never called back so today I cancelled it. I have to pay the $5+ microSIM card but they told me they will not charge the $35 activation fee.

At the end I was told VirginMobile Canada does not officially support unlocked devices.

I’ll keep my Virgin SIM and see if they worked things out in a few weeks and try again.

I would be very interested to here if anyone else has got this plan to work on their iPad.
