Meet The New Kid In Class

by on September 1st, 2010

This summer I had the best day of my university career. It was the first day of a summer class, students were arriving and pulling out their Macbooks or other net books getting ready to take notes, and I watched them all anxiously.

After almost everyone had their computers set up, I reached into my small shoulder bag and put my iPad on the desk in front of me. My professor’s eyes lit up as she spied the cutting edge technology. Other students gasped in awe, many too afraid to ask the obvious question.

One brave classmate piped up and asked in a tone of reverence, “Is that an iPad?” The class hushed to hear my response.

A silly question, really, since I don’t think there is a soul on the planet who couldn’t identify an iPad from a mile away. It’s thin, it’s light, it’s sleek and sexy with a massive touch screen. There is no mistaking it for another tablet.

I glowed with pride knowing that no one in that room had been this close to one before. I tried to remain nonchalant as I replied, “Yes,” and proceeded to pull out a very compact Apple keyboard dock and set myself up with a new Pages document in seconds.

Now that I’ve had that first class to get used to using my iPad for school work, I’m getting anxious again for the beginning of fall classes. New apps have come out to organize homework, buy textbooks online, and so much more! I’m looking forward to trying them all out and sharing my experiences with all you iPad lovers in Canada.

    Cool story bro!

Any specific apps you would recommend or any insights into note-taking on ipad?

That is quite possibly the best iPad story of the year! Such a great read!

I’m testing out a bunch of note taking apps right now, so watch for updates on my thoughts next week! Currently, I like Pages for it’s simplicity. It’s a good standby. :)

Hey – this almost makes me wish I was back at school ;)

I wonder how many students at my college will have iPads next week (I am not a student, I work there). I should start setting mine up on my desk and working on it. I am waiting for that case with attached keyboard first though

    You’re a nerd, Gary ;)

But definitely, Apple products have that affect Gillian! Enjoy the 15 minutes of fame you’ll get! I don’t particularly recommend it but the same thing happens with iphones and bus stops!

I’m using “Complete Class Organizer”. I tried CourseNotes but I found it was too clunky to use it. I also like Class Organizer’s way of sorting things by date, and its mini-calendar. If it could only sync the calendar and todos with iCal or Google Calendar it would be perfect.
