Financial Times Release iPad App – Free Until end of July!

by on May 17th, 2010

The Financial Times (FT) has released their iPad app and it is free until July 31st. This would be a good opportunity to try it before you buy it.

The iPad FT uses the same font as the newspaper issue of the FT . The app is a lighter version of the FT.com website and content is refreshed throughout the day.  News, analysis and comments are displayed in sections that mimic the website. Live market data, personal portfolio details and a HD channel of video editorials are also available with the app. A physical, scrolling browsing method is used to access the different sections.

The app and its content will initially be open to anyone to access for an initial period until July 31st with luxury watch manufacturer Hublot being the exclusive launch sponsor. Subsequently the app will still be free to install but access to content will be governed by the same subscription rules which apply across FT.com and the FT iPhone app.

Up to 10 articles can be read for free each month as long as a user registers. A two-tier subscription offering would include a premium and a standard package. The FT’s database of registered users records the platform they are using to view content and the times at which they visit.

The iPad app will have limited advertising inventory available and advertisers will need to pay extra for a presence on it. The Hublot deal is expected to be succeeded by other sponsorships in the first few months. The FT may be a bit cautious about users getting overloaded with ads, because they have seen a lot of negative feedback in the iPhone world from ads.

In brief, the FT iPad Edition allows you to:

- Customize the order of the pages to suit your preferences

- Watch the FT video coverage

- View your FT.com portfolio

- Access the latest articles from the FT

The FT iPad app can be downloaded from the iTunes store and a video demonstrating it’s usability can be found here on YouTube.
