iOS 5 Split Keyboard Feature For iPad Has “Phantom Buttons” On The Edges [Screenshot]

by on February 5th, 2012

With the introduction of iOS 5, the iPad received a new form of keyboard called the “split keyboard” to apparently assist in faster typing with two hands on the iPad’s bigger screen. Turns out, this split keyboard has a few “phantom buttons” on the edges (via LifeHacker). Discovered by @danfrakes from Finer Things in iOS, the hidden buttons are helpful for users who you’re used to typing Y with their left hand. So, if you tap next to the Y key on the “split keyboard”, it should type the letter T.

Take a look at the following image to get a better idea.

For those who aren’t aware on how to bring up the “split keyboard” on their iPads, simply tap-hold on the “toggle keyboard” button in the lower right to get a menu, or tap-hold on it and drag upwards. Reverse that to reunite the two halves back to normal at the bottom.

Wow, that’s kinda cool in a bizarre way. I probably have been using the phantom keys without knowing it. Thanks!
