How to Sync Old iPad Data with New iPad 2 in iTunes

by on March 30th, 2011

Did you just upgrade from the original iPad to iPad 2? I’ve had some questions about how to setup your iPad 2 with your original iPad’s data. It’s very simple. Let’s get started.

1. Sync your original iPad in iTunes. A backup will be created.

2. Plug in your new iPad 2 into iTunes. When the setup screen shows the dialogue, “An iPad has been previously synced with this computer,” choose “Restore from the backup of” and choose the most recent iPad backup. All your data and settings will be quickly moved to iPad 2.

That’s it. Let me know if you run into any problems or issues!

I didn’t have an iPad 1 so I used iTunes to “transfer purchases” from my iPhone to my iPad 2. Worked well. However, I would like to transfer contacts and maybe calendar items. Any suggestions? I do not have mobile me if that is a way to do it.

I did the restore from backup and no music or apps transferred over during the restore. I hit the sync button again after the initial sync, then everything was added. Very strange, but at least it worked.
