How To: Download Purchased TV Shows On Your iPad

by on December 27th, 2011

Ah…home for the holidays. Away from the stresses of work (or school), and maybe even the big city. It’s nice, but it’s also got some drawbacks. Being away from home also means you’re away from your desktop or laptop where you’ve kept most of your TV shows and music, and while iTunes Match should mitigate any of your music needs (maybe), your stash of TV shows on your iPad is slowly dwindling as you continue to hide from your distant relatives and their probing questions.

Never fear though. Like many of Apple’s online services in the last year, TV episode purchases have started to move to the cloud too, and now you can grab your previously purchased shows from your iPad wherever you’re online. Here’s how.

Start by going to iTunes on the iPad. You’ll notice the Purchased icon in the bottom, second from the right.

Tap that and you’ll see the list of purchased music you’ve made on the iTunes store. In the top left corner, you’ll see Music. Tap that and you’ll open up some options. Tap on TV Shows.

Options for Purchased Items in iTunes

This will give you a list of TV shows you’ve purchased. Ever. (Don’t judge.)

Tap on any TV season (or episode) and you should see the little cloud icon beside each episode.

Tap the cloud icon and you’ll be able to select HD or SD quality video for you to download directly to your iPad! Type in your iTunes password and that’s it! All your TV shows at your finger tips.

Movies aren’t available in the same capacity, but for what it’s worth, it’s a step in the right direction, especially if you’re away from home more often than you’d like. Of course, you can do the same thing with your music and bypass some of the benefits of iTunes Match, but I definitely find this more useful with TV shows.

You can do this with your Apple TV too and stream your TV shows without the need for iTunes Home Sharing turned on. You’ll see the TV option the main menu, with Purchased being the first drop down selection.

Have fun with your newfound ability to get your favourite TV shows wherever your are!
