Trucks HD — Why You May Want To Hold Off Buying This App For Your Kids [Video Review]

by on May 10th, 2012

I’m always on the lookout or fun educational apps for my 2-year-old son. So I was excited when I saw Trucks HD in this weeks featured section of the App Store. My son loves dump trucks and diggers, so I thought this would be right up his ally.

Plus, the developers – Duck Duck Moose – have a god reputation for educational apps for kids. But I have to say, I’m not overly impressed.

First of all it’s not a universal app. If you want this on your iPhone and your iPad, you have to buy it twice at a cost of $2 each time. It’s somewhat frustrating considering the game isn’t optimized for the retina display. The only real difference in the versions, is the app is sized differently for the iPhone and the iPad.

If you’re thinking about getting this app, I recommend you buy it for the iPhone, and then just install it on the iPad. In full screen mode on the iPad you’ll see a little more pixelation than the iPad HD version, but for this app it doesn’t really matter.

The game itself is very simple. You have the choice of five different mini games, each with their own tasks. Here is what Duck Duck Moose claims about Trucks HD.

Trucks is an educational app that will teach children about sequencing, sorting, and problem solving. The activities encourage experimentation and will stimulate their imaginations.

I will admit, it does most of what it claims, but in a very simplistic way. Too simplistic in my opinion. You can almost go through each mini game simply by tapping on the screen and without too much thought.

To give you a better idea of what I’m talking about, please have a look at my video review.

I may be a little tough in the review of this app, but I really feel it misses the mark of being a good educational game.

Don’t get me wrong, I love the graphics and look of Trucks HD, but there just isn’t enough replay value because of how easy it is.

This is too bad, especially coming from Duck Duck Moose, which has won awards for some of its other apps. As a note, I’m going to try out some of their other apps, so stay tuned for those reviews.

Overall, for $2 I think you can find better value in the app store, and games that are a lot more educational.

Let me know what you think.

I’m really enjoying your reviews of kid-centric apps. At first glance, my sons might enjoy this, but your review changed my mind. Thank you!
