App Review: Don’t Let The Pigeon Run This App [Child's Play]

by on January 29th, 2013

If you have kids you’ve likely heard the name Mo Willems. He’s a best selling kids author with such gems as Don’t Let The Pigeon Drive The Bus, Knuffle Bunny, and Edwina The Dinosaur That Didn’t Know She Was Extinct.

Well I was pleasantly surprised to find out, Willems also has an iOS app – Don’t Let The Pigeon Run This App. I was a little hesitant at first to pay the $6 to download it, but since my son started playing with it, I can honestly say it’s worth every penny.

Pigeon

The app follows in the success of Willems other Pigeon books, but now your child gets to help create the story. There are three different modes to choose from. The first is simply a read along to a set story. It’s the other two modes that really help this app shine.

In the second mode your child will get to answer various questions by tapping on one the three provided choices. There are no right or wrong answers, and each choice will be incorporated into the story. When finished, the story plays out with Willems narrating the story based on the selected answers.

It’s the third option of play that’s really fun. Again, your child has to give answers to the various questions such as “what’s your favorite game?” or “what do you think really stinks?”. But this time around your child taps an onscreen button and voices the answer. So the possible answers are endless. Once done, again the story starts with narration from Willems, but this time your child’s voice is inserted where needed. So now your child is helping to tell the story.

It’s a lot of fun to hear what your kids can come up for their answers. And if your child makes a really good story, it can be saved and played back later.

Here’s my video review of Don’t Let The Pigeon Run This App so you can get a sense of how the app plays out.

The story isn’t the only thing children can do with this app. They can also learn to draw the pigeon with the help of Willems. He guides them step-by-step through the process. What’s great, is the picture your kid creates – no matter what they draw – it too gets incorporated into the story.

Don’t Let The Pigeon Run This App provides a lot of replay value and is a lot of fun for your kids. Let me know what you think in the comments section.
