First Impressions of the iPad 64GB 3G+Wifi

by on May 2nd, 2010

I’ve been trying to get my hands on an iPad since the initial release, but as we all know, they’ve been sold out and when in stock they’ve managed to vanish in matter of hours. Unfortunately for me, the closest US Apple store is a 2 hour drive and a customs headache. On Saturday, however, I decided to take the trip to Buffalo and pick up the iPad 3G.

My original intention back when the iPad launched was to save some cash and buy the 64GB WiFi version, but after experiencing the tediousness of jailbreaking my iPhone and keeping up with the Apple vs. DevTeam battles, I decided that I’d rather not have the headache of needing to jailbreak my iPad in order to use cellular data.

I’ve actually been getting pretty used to my iPhone 3GS running 3.1.3 with no Jailbreak, especially knowing that most of things I miss will be making their “official” appearance in OS 4.0.

iPad 3G First Impressions…

I didn’t want to… Actually, I was hoping I’d feel like I just wasted a thousand dollars and hock it on eBay in a few days but, as all things Apple go, I absolutely love it.

Even after a mere 10 minutes of setting up I’m noticing how amazing the screen looks. How precise the touchscreen is – it’s so precise and responsive it makes my 3GS feel “off” by comparison. Apple has certainly mastered the “feel” of the touchscreen interface.

I synced 10GB of music, movies and apps in less than 2 minutes. On my iPhone 3GS it would have taken far longer. I want to say at least 10 minutes, but I can’t be certain. I’ll conduct some speed comparisons later this week.

I wish I could say something about the 3G component but alas, I am merely a Canadian and we come last. I’m debating cutting my iPhone SIM and tossing it inside the iPad. I doubt that the Rogers network will actually be able to tell the difference between my iPhone and my iPad.

Overall, I’m floored.

  • Nice work on picking up the iPad 3G! Now the waiting game continues for what Rogers will charge for PAYG data.

All iPads are factory unlocked, so you will never have to worry about jailbreaking it to use a Canadian data plan. 🙂

  • So I'm from Toronto as well, and was first in line at the Buffalo Apple Store on Sat am, arrived at 8:45 for a 10:00 store opening. by 9:30 there was a couple from Ottawa and then a couple from Toronto and by 9:45 there were maybe a dozen in line. I bought a 64gig wifi with the intention of jailbreaking my iPhone and using mywi. That was a frustrating experience and it took the better part of Sunday to get it working – but it does work as advertised. I too am surprised at how much I enjoy the iPad user experience.

Any Wifi connectivity issues? (Dropping etc) That's only thing that's holding me back, giant thread of problems on apple support forums

  • Wifi connectivity is at 100%. No issues so far. I'm guessing it may have something to do with the 3G/Wifi component. The 3G version is a bit different from the WiFi version and I have a feeling that it sends/receives a stronger signal because of the plastic that's used to get the 3G working.

I also want to note that the GPS location im getting from the iPad 3G is far more accurate than my iPhone 3GS. It also finds its location noticeably faster.

Let's hope they make an announcement soon. We're a week away from pre-order day and Rogers might be the deciding factor between WiFi and 3G for many people!

So where do you get the microSIM? Through Rogers?

  • I bought another sim from rogers and hooked up a separate data plan and voice plan. Unfortunately they do not activate iphones/ipads without a voice plan of some type. From undisclosed source the iPAD 3G will not be available in Canada until Mid-Late June.

For those interested activate a iphone with data and voice plan. You will also need to cut down your sim. DO NOT CUT THE MICRO CHIP, bad things happen. Then you have to GO TO SETTINGS – CELLULAR DATA – APN SETTINGS. Under APN type “rogers-core-appl1.apn”. Insert your sim card and your 3G service will work.
