One of the major updates in the upcoming iOS 5, scheduled for release this fall 2011, is a completely redesigned notification system.
Instead of being forced to used the intrusive and annoying iOS 4.3.3 and earlier pop-up notifications, iOS 5 moves notifications to the status bar and then hides them in the new “Notification Center. While you can opt out of using this new notification system, it is one of the major benefits of iOS 5.
The only problem is that in order to get the new notification system, you either have to wait until this fall for iOS 5 to be released or create an iOS developer account ($99) and download the iOS 5 beta.
However, if you’re iPad is jailbroken, you can instead use a Cydia tweak called “MobileNotifier” for free!
With MobileNotifier installed, any time you receive a notification on your iPad (email, calendar event, etc) a small flag pops up at the top of the screen. You can then choose to tap on the notification and open the specific app or dismiss it. You also get some customization settings via the iPad Settings app.
The point of MobileNotifier is to replace the standard iOS notification pop-up from interrupting your screen.
To install MobileNotifier, you’ll have to do the following:
1.) Open Cydia
2.) Tap “Sources”, then tap “Edit” and then tap “Add”
3.) Enter the following URL: http://phajas.xen.prgmr.com/repo/
Once the above URL is saved, you can search Cydia for MobileNotifier and install the tweak. Check it out!
