Rumors this morning indicate that Apple has reportedly started development of the next generation iPad and aside from new features that will surely debut in the device, the next-gen iPad will feature an OLED screen.
The report comes from DigiTimes and sources within the components sector indicate that OLED display prices are expected to lower in the 2010 – 2011 time frame, which makes the technology more friendly for the iPad.
Current prices for OLED panels run approximately $500 a panel, causing some to cast doubt on the use of OLED with the iPad:
But Digitimes Research senior analyst Mingchi Kuo is conservative about the idea of iPads with OLED panels. He pointed out that OLED panels’ high price will still be the major obstacle for them to be adopted in the iPad in 2011.
By contrast, an LCD panel runs from $60 – $70.
…the current price of the 9.7-inch LCD panel for iPad is about US$60-70, but the price of a 9.7-inch OLED panel is about US$500. He said the price gap is unlikely to narrow significantly in 2010 or 2011.
