Last Minute iPad 3/HD Rumours: Haptic Feedback, iPhoto for iPad, LTE for Verizon

by on March 7th, 2012

Here’s some last minute iPad 3/HD rumours–the next tablet from Apple will have some sort of haptic touch feedback system, using the technology from Finnish start up Senseg, according to The Guardian:

But the Guardian believes that the “touch” refers to a technology from Senseg, a Finnish startup which has developed a system called E-Sense which appears to give texture to a touchscreen. By using “tixels” generated by electric fields from elements embedded around the screen, it can make areas of the screen feel rough, ridged or rounded – and change those just as the screen pixels can change.

When the Guardian met Senseg’s chiefs in their Helsinki offices in January, its directors declined to say whether they had spoken to Apple about the use of the technology in the iPad – but said they were talking to tablet manufacturers.

Earlier we saw TNW talk about haptic feedback on the next iPad as a possible ‘next big feature’, with reference to the huge gap in updates between iOS 5.1 betas and lack of new APIs–hinting Apple is trying to keep something under wraps. iOS 5.1 GM is set to be released any moment.

LTE iPads for Verizon

A last minute report from the WSJ notes Verizon Wireless in the USA will benefit from LTE-enabled iPads, as they have the largest LTE network in the U.S.:

The new iPad that Apple Inc. is expected to announce Wednesday could do more than lift the technology company’s sales. It could also be a boon for Verizon Wireless.

The new iPad will support a wireless broadband technology called LTE, people familiar with the matter have said. Verizon has by far the country’s largest LTE network, which could give the company a competitive edge this year against rival AT&T Inc.

At this point in time, LTE seems to be a sure thing. Future Shop and Best Buy in Canada are already clearing out 3G iPad models for $150 off.

iPhoto for iPad

John Gruber from Daring Fireball notes the iOS software release we could see and should see is iPhoto for iPad, considering we already have Garageband and iMovie:

  • We’ve already got iMovie and GarageBand for iPad. iPhoto seems like a glaring omission.
  • A good way to predict what’s coming next for the iPad is to ask yourself what sort of things are keeping regular people from using an iPad as their main computer. Photo management is the biggest one I can think of.
  • A retina display iPad should make photos look amazing.
