Recent reports have pointed to Apple adopting the new “Light Peak” high speed interconnect technology, which is faster than USB 3.0, on its future Mac products. With recent iPad 2 cases featuring mystery cut-outs, those ports are now also believed to possibly include Light Peak.
With iPad 2 cases, as seen below, including these mystery ports, many have previously speculated that it is a port for USB. In other words, it is the idea that Apple would include both a dock connector and USB cable in the next-generation iPad.
One of the reasons that this rumor is consistently appearing is that the purported iPad 2 case designs have all been very similar from various third-party manufacturers, most of which include these mystery ports.
The idea of Light Peak being adopted in the second-generation iPad spawns from the possibility of Apple using the technology in their future Mac products. Moreover, Light Peak prototypes have been using hybrid USB 3 connectors, which can be easily mistaken for USB, leading many to speculate that the iPad 2 will include USB.
With the expected upcoming iPad 2 release, adopting Light Peak in the next iPad has about the same chance as USB being adopted. In either case, as seen in these iPad 2 case designs, USB or Light Peak may very well show up this Spring 2011.
