First Hands-On With iPad Mini Physical Mockup [Video]

by on September 19th, 2012

Yesterday, new photos of an alleged working 7.85″ iPad Mini hit the web, highlighting the product’s widely rumored features like thinner bezels, lightning dock, metallic backplate, dual speakers and more. Today, another physical iPad Mini mockup based on the same specs has been obtained by Gizchina.com (via MacRumors) which is basically one of those $15 dummy units selling through Chinese online marketplace Taobao, in white and black colors.

The source has also published a hands-on video of this iPad Mini physical mockup, comparing it with an original iPad and an iPhone 4 for a better idea of the purported smaller iPad’s size.

“While this dummy iPad Mini might not be a functioning version of the 7.85 inch Apple tablet it still gives us some valuable clues as to how the real mini iPad will look and what its specification might be. I spotted this dummy iPad Mini for sale on Taobao, China’s eBay, where I picked it up for roughly $13″.

The 64GB iPad Mini mockup obtained by the source shows a thinner chassis device with noticeably thinner bezels, a rear camera and the new smaller lightnning connector as found in the iPhone 5. Two speakers are also shown on either side of the lightning connector with a power/lock button and a 3.5mm head phone jack on top. the traditional volume rocker is however replaced by a new volume contol button design featuring two seperate buttons. You can also see an LTE antenna and a nano-SIM tray, something not seen in previous mockups.

Looking forward to the mini, but skeptical that the price will be as low as has been rumored – especially with the pricing of the new iPod Touches starting at $299.99 for 32 GB. I’m also surprised to see this mock up in 64 GB with LTE. I don’t know how they will be able to sell that for less than $500. My guess is at best the line up will be priced as follows without LTE: $350 for 16 GB, $450 for 32 GB, and $550 for 64 GB (if they even have a 64 GB model). Add $50 more per model for LTE version. That is assuming that it will be non-Retina with the A5 chip (not A5X). I’m very anxious to see where they go with the mini – hopefully Apple has a trick up its sleeve.
