Apple’s 7.85-Inch ‘iPad Mini’ to Debut as Wi-Fi Only [Rumour]

by on October 9th, 2012

Looks like the ‘iPad Mini’ rumours have started to ramp up. Earlier today, we heard about case makers cancelling their production plans as the supposed 7.85-inch tablet was undergoing last minute changes. Now, the Guardian reports the new smaller iPad will debut with Wi-Fi only:

Apple’s expected “iPad mini” will only come in a Wi-Fi version – but there will also be a revised version of the iPad with 4G connectivity compatible with the UK’s Everything Everywhere network, and sporting the new “Lightning” connector, industry sources have told the Guardian.

Rumours have been building for months that Apple would move into the lower-priced end of the tablet market by offering a smaller version of its 9.7in iPad, dubbed the “iPad mini” and with a 7.8in screen.

The reasoning for Wi-Fi only is based on keeping costs low, and to reserve the larger iPad as the only cellular data capable device. Sources tell the Guardian the announcement of the smaller ‘iPad Mini’ could happen at any time, with retail sources noting a November availability date. Also interesting to note would be a refresh to the existing iPad to introduce the Lightning connector.

Earlier it was reported Apple suppliers have ordered parts for 10 million ‘iPad Mini’ units, with other rumours indicating the device is already under production at Foxconn plants in Brazil. Below are images tweeted by @SonnyDickson, which are images of a purported smaller iPad sporting the new Lightning connector:

What do you think? Would a smaller Wi-Fi only iPad meet your mobile needs? If the 9.7-inch iPad is for surfing on the couch…what good would a smaller Wi-Fi only device be for? Probably the most obvious reason would be to capture the segment of buyers that would consider the Google Nexus or Amazon Kindle Fire instead of the Apple’s larger and more expensive iPad.

Why can’t apple come up with a special Bluetooth pairing with the iPhone to use it’s cell data and GPS location?

this will be a huge disappointment if Apple actually makes their iDevice that is more mobile to be stalled by a wifi only offering. Its smaller in size so its more mobile … let it be more mobile for Gods sake!

Really hope this rumor is just that. a rumor.

Relax guys… Sell it for $199 and I can tether from my iPhone. Who actually pays for a data plan just for a tablet these days?
