New rumours today point to the possibility of Apple releasing an “iPad 2 Plus” in late 2011.
Recent rumours point to Apple releasing the iPad 3 this fall/winter 2011, but this new rumour from FBR Capital Markets via International Business Times says that Apple is actually planning to release an evolutionary upgrade called the “iPad 2 Plus”.
Typically Apple observes a one-year release cycle for its iOS products, but with the recent change in the iPhone release cycle (more than one year), the source of this new “iPad 2 Plus” rumour says that this release cycle change may hit the iPad as well.
“There are some indications from the supply chain that Apple may look to introduce an ‘iPad 2 Plus’ device as they put out request for quotes from various component suppliers for this marginally different device,” FBR Capital Markets analyst Craig Berger wrote in a note to clients.
Apple may launch the device in late 2011, the analyst said, citing supply-chain contacts.
Again, this view of an “iPad 2 Plus” is contrary to many rumours that point to a revolutionary iPad upgrade labelled as the “iPad 3″ coming this fall/winter 2011.
But because Apple made so many improvements with the iPad 2 (dual cameras, A5 processor, thinner enclosure), this new report says the “iPad 2 Plus” will essentially be an enhanced iPad 2 instead of Apple releasing an all-new iPad 3.
While fun to read, definitely store this iPad rumour in the probably-not-happening category. What do you think?
