Digitimes has become a questionable source for outrageous rumours but this time some interesting details are being reported. Their latest report notes Apple will unveil a cheaper 8GB iPad 2 at at next week’s March 7th iPad 3 media event, alongside 16GB/32GB iPad 3 units:
As Apple has scheduled an event on March 7, sources from its upstream supply chain pointed out that the company is expected to launch two iPad 3 models – a 16GB version and 32GB version.
In addition to iPad 3, Apple is also expected to unveil an 8GB iPad 2, allowing the tablet PC series to cover different segments and to defend against Windows 8-based tablet PCs, the sources noted.
They didn’t stop there, as once again whispers of a smaller, cheaper iPad to compete with the Amazon Kindle Fire have emerged, as 7.85 inch iPads are apparently being ‘planned’. Also noted is a rumoured price drop of the iPad 2:
Makers in Apple’s iPad supply chain have started delivering samples of 7.85-inch iPads for verification, with volume production likely to begin in the third quarter of 2012 at the earliest, according to industry sources.
The price of the 7.85-inch iPad is likely to be set at US$249-299, since Apple is also expected to release an 8GB iPad 2 for US$349-399, and has lowered the price of the 16GB iPad 2 to US$449, the sources noted.
The noise of a smaller iPad just won’t go away, and it hints at a possible future release. As for the price drop of the iPad 2, I can see that happening since the original iPad experienced a price drop after the iPad 2 launch. March 7th can’t some soon enough!
