WSJ: Apple’s 7.85-Inch ‘iPad Mini’ Has Started Production

by on October 3rd, 2012

We heard earlier reports of Apple’s iPad mini starting production in Brazil, but now according to the Wall Street Journal, their sources note the smaller iPad has started production by suppliers in Asia:

Apple Inc.’s Asian component suppliers have started mass production of a new tablet computer smaller than the current iPad, people with knowledge of the situation said, as the Silicon Valley company tries to stay competitive against rivals such as Google Inc. and Amazon.com Inc. that are offering smaller, less-expensive alternatives to the iPad.

Two of the people said the smaller tablet will have a 7.85-inch liquid-crystal display with a lower resolution compared with the latest iPad model that came out in March.

The sources further note LG and AU Optronics started mass production of the LCD display panels last month.

Apple is rumoured to have an October media event with invitations possibly being sent out on the 10th for the new iPad and have availability ready for the holiday quarter.

The WSJ is typically well-connected to solid sources for leaking tidbits of information regarding Apple’s upcoming products.
