This week, reports indicate that VLC, the popular video player for the Mac, may be coming soon to your iPad.
App developer Applidium has spent the last several months porting the open source player to the iPad and has recently submitted the port to the App Store.
If approved, the app would be available as early as next week and like on the Mac, VLC for iPad will be free!
After several month of porting, we are proud to announce the release of VLC for the iPad! This application stands out for two reasons. First, it will be available for free on the AppStore. But thats not all. VLC is an OpenSource project. We are currently preparing our patches for submission to the main VLC tree. And obviously, we will release our current working tree when the app will hit the AppStore. If everything goes well, VLC for the iPad should be available next week.
On the Mac, VLC can play many more video formats than QuickTime and much more than the built-in video support in iPad. With the video format flexibility that VLC delivers, the iPad would be able to pay almost any video codec, giving the iPad a great appeal as a video device.
Many of the specifics are unknown at this time such as if video files will be streamed or if they can be transferred into iTunes, but if the app is approved, definitely jump on it!
