Looks like Skype will release the first iPad version of its VoIP app this summer 2010, according to Skype’s Asia-Pacific VP Dan Neary.
While the iPhone version of Skype works fine on the iPad, the app does have to work in the 2x blown-up state. In other words, the iPhone Skype app is not designed for the iPad. However, you can still subscribe to the $3/month unlimited calling plan and it will work on the iPad.
Even more juicy is that Neary further hints that Skype may introduce a video chat feature
“We believe that video is part of the Skype experience…and we believe that video is moving aggressively into the mobile environment, so stay tuned on an announcement on that.”
The current generation iPad does not include a front-facing camera to support a video chat feature, but the next revision of the iPad may include such built-in hardware. As a matter of fact, it is almost guaranteed that the next iPad will include a front-facing camera since there is actually room for one!
Even Neary hopes that the next iPad will include a front-facing camera
“I think the iPad is an incredibly exciting product but it is clearly not the same communications device in its current form that the iPhone is…So we’re looking forward to further advancements in the iPad and where that can go in the future.”
The next generation iPhone, on the other hand, has been widely believed to include a front-facing camera, so the video chat capabilities of Skype will definitely be made to good use on the next iPhone before the next iPad.
