Domenic Pilla, the Shoppers Drug Mart CEO, is continuing to increase the online presence of Shoppers Drug Mart stores.
After recently launching their first online store for the company’s high-end “Murale” beauty chain, the company is seeking to become more digital in an effort to increase customer throughput and bottom-line profits.
While the company has a social media presence, which includes an iPhone app that launched in 2010, the company has been slow in adopting online technology to support sales. Moreover, Shoppers has been feeling increasing pressures from other retailers such as the Bay, Wal-Mart, and Amazon.ca.
So what can the company do to boost sales, manage customers, and improve productivity? To begin, Shoppers Drug Mart is handing its cosmeticians in 10 stores the iPad! To shed light on this new direction, Mr. Pilla says to think of this as the Genius Bar at Apple Stores. While this is only a test-run, if successful, the company plans on expanding the use of the iPad to other areas in their stores.
As someone who is a 5-minute drive from a handful of Shoppers Drug Mart stores, I am excited with this new direction. I think the iPad is the perfect device to support customers, whether it is inventory management, answering questions, or even making a purchase!
