Rogers Launches New iPad Data Sharing Options

by on November 4th, 2010

For the Holiday 2010 quarter, Rogers has launched a set of new data sharing options for iPad.

The original Rogers data-only iPad plans are still available and for reference, they are listed below:

  • $15/month: 250MB (auto-renewal every 30 days)
  • $35/month: 5GB (auto-renewal every 30 days)

As many are aware, these iPad data plans have no contract, are essentially pay-as-you-go data options, and everything is done right on the iPad.

The new data sharing options however come in two forms: a Voice Plan with Shareable Data or a Data Sharing Add-On.

1.) Voice Shareable Data Packages

If you are looking to start new service with Rogers on a smartphone or are an existing customer with a smartphone who wants to have a voice/data sharing bundle, then you have three packages to choose from:

$55 Package (plus 2.43 GRRF in BC/AB/ON)

  • Minutes: 200 daytime minutes
  • Evenings/Weekends: Unlimited weekends; Evenings from 9PM – 7AM
  • Choice of One Feature: Unlimited Messages or My5 Canada-wide or Unlimited Local Network Calling or 6PM Early Evening Calling or Double Your Minutes
  • Data Included: 1GB
  • Contract: 3 Years

$65 Package (plus 2.43 GRRF in BC/AB/ON)

  • Monthly fee: $65
  • Minutes: 300 daytime minutes
  • Evenings/Weekends: Unlimited weekends; Evenings from 9PM – 7AM
  • Choice of One Feature: Unlimited Messages or My5 Canada-wide or Unlimited Local Network Calling or 6PM Early Evening Calling or Double Your Minutes
  • Data Included: 1GB
  • Contract: 3 Years

$70 Package (plus 2.43 GRRF in BC/AB/ON)

  • Monthly fee: $70
  • Minutes: 500 daytime minutes
  • Evenings/Weekends: Unlimited weekends; Evenings from 9PM – 7AM
  • Choice of One Feature: Unlimited Messages or My5 Canada-wide or Unlimited Local Network Calling or 6PM Early Evening Calling or Double Your Minutes
  • Data Include: 1GB
  • Contract: 3 Years

Each of the three above plans provides service for one smartphone.

After you have a plan chosen, you can share that 1GB data plan with your iPad by adding $15.00 (plus $1.96 GRRF) to the existing plan price. Note that this $15.00 extra can be removed at any time.

The second option is a Data Sharing Add-On:

2.) Smartphone Data Share Plans

If you are already with Rogers and are satisfied with your existing smartphone voice plan, then you have three data sharing add-on options:

$30 Data Sharing Add-On

  • Monthly fee: $30
  • Data Include: 1GB
  • Contract: 3 Years

$45 Data Sharing Add-On

  • Monthly fee: $45
  • Data Include: 2GB
  • Contract: 3 Years

$60 Data Sharing Add-On

  • Monthly fee: $60
  • Data Include: 5GB
  • Contract: 3 Years

In other words, any of the above three plans can be added to your existing smartphone voice plan to provide service to one smartphone.

After you have a data add-on chosen, you can share that data amount with your iPad by adding $15.00 (plus $1.96 GRRF) to the existing plan price. Note that this $15.00 extra can be removed at any time.

Overall, these are not the greatest value options available, but we are talking about Rogers after all.

    64GB iPad with Wi-Fi = 64GB iPad with Wi-Fi + 3G -$130 CAD
    Jailbreak iPhone = Free
    MyWi =$19.99 USD

Savings over iPad with Wi-Fi + 3G = $130CAD-19.99USD+monthly service charge for data sharing.

How the hell can anyone make sense of any of this?

    It’s pretty brutal.
We tried to simplify it as much as possible but Rogers thrives on confusion!

I got excited for a very brief second then quickly remembered this is Rogers were talking about. Luckily I was right. These are terrible. Get a clue Rogers.

so if I understand this correctly…. i can share my 1GB plan for $15, or have an independent data plan for 15? granted its only 250 megs, but i top off around 400 MB on my iphone per month. On top of that the Share packages seem to be $10 Higher then they should. $55 isnt bad, but myself and im sure others are left asking “What about call ID and voice mail?” 55 suddenly becomes 65 + tax + 15 to share that data… ouch >.<

  • VinMtl

Yes, Rogers sucks but the breakdown is really helpful.

I have a 6GB 3-yr plan for my iPhone (I NEVER max out my data) that I just wish I could share with my iPad, too… Any suggestions?

Well in your case, the best way is to jailbreak your iPhone and purchase ($20) MyWi. That way you share data on your iPhone and iPad.

We have some jailbreaking tutorials available if you want a guide!

How well does the MyWi app work? Hove you done this with your iPad? How is the connection and speed?

  • http://www.iphoneincanada.ca/ Ex

MyWi is on my iPhone which is jailbroken. It’s amazing. Good speed but the iPhone does get hot.

No thanks – I’ll just tether my iPad through my unlimited WIND Android phone at no extra charge.

  • Kerry

I’m glad you did but still there seems to be these massively complex arrangements that may seem to some to save a small amount of money over a long period. But in the end with plan change fees, prorated billing and other charges, I just can’t see anyone making a passionate argument that one carriere is anymore competitive than the other.

  • David Ranson

I have to say Rogers and Canadian carrier in general rip off the consumer at every turn, charge a $15 fee and allow people to share the data with their existing plan….

  • David

I’m in the same boat. I know they allowed a pooling of the 6GB for $20 up until a little while ago, but now I can’t get them to add that feature to my plan any more, even after pushing hard and talking to a manager… For now the 3G in my iPad is staying redundant, unfortunately!

The data rates and treatment offered to us by Rogers and all the other carriers are annoying as hell. The loooove to confuse and sucker in people with their archaic plans and explanations of them.

I pay 50$ for Bell home internet, 30$ for my iPhone 6G data plan with Rogers and 35$ for my Rogers iPad data plan. So, all in all, 115 bucks plus taxes for data alone. I’m not even going to mention my land and cell phone costs. And since I need all of these for work, I’ve opted to forego cable TV instead which would set me back, at minimum, 45 bucks for channels worth watching (at least, here in Quebec.) My AppleTV and Netflix account for 8$/ month keep me entertained just fine, thankyouverymuch.

Not being able to thether my iPad to my 6G iPhone plan is the ultimate rip-off and wanting no longer to be taken for a ride, I’ll make do with WIFI from now on.
