Reuters: Next-Generation iPad Will Feature Front & Back Facing Cameras

by on December 10th, 2010

It is almost universally expected that Apple will feature a front-facing camera in the next-generation iPad. This camera would be the FaceTime camera for iPad, bringing the iPad into the FaceTime iPhone, iPod touch and Mac family.

However, there is also a smaller expectation that Apple will feature a back-facing iPad camera but this has been much less certain. The main point of criticism has been the feasibility of featuring a back-facing camera in a device that is significantly larger than an easy to hold pocket device.

But even with no confirmation or clues from Apple, and various feature criticisms, evidence for a front and back-facing camera, as well as other features such as being slimmer and including a higher resolution display, in the next-generation iPad has continued to grow. The fuel of this growth has come from various supplier rumors/reports and more recently from case manufacturers.

Now, in what is the most credible source among all of the recent iPad news, Reuters is reporting that the iPad will include both front and back-facing cameras:

Two sources said the suppliers were preparing for a new round of production in the first quarter for components previously supplied for the original iPad, while two other sources said they were ramping up for a new iPad.

One source said the revamped model would feature cameras on the front and and back of the device, enabling Apple’s Facetime video conferencing service. Another source said it would be slimmer, lighter and have a better resolution display than the first iPad.

While it seems that Reuters is simply restating a lot of the existing rumors that are floating around, they are the only mainstream news outlet to essentially support the recent next-generation iPad feature claims.

So, what do you think? Cameras coming? Did any of your friends already buy their 2010 iPads with rumors of the next iPad coming soon?
