This week, research firm IDC reported that year 2010 saw 17 million consumer tablet shipments. The information is collected by IDC’s Worldwide Quarterly Media Tablet and eReader Tracker.
In a IDC press release, the research firm stated that the tablet market saw growth of 45% in the third quarter. This growth was reportedly due almost completely to sales of the Apple iPad.
IDC further indicated that 4.8 million consumer tablets were shipped globally in the third quarter of 2010, which is an increase from the 3.3 million units shipped in second quarter of 2010. Of the 4.8 million tablets shipped in 3Q10, approximately 4.2 million tablet units were iPads.
“The media tablet market’s rapid evolution will continue to accelerate in 4Q10 and beyond with new product and service introductions, channel expansion, price competition and experimentation with new use cases among consumers and enterprises,”
