Yesterday, portions of a deposition which Jony Ive presented at Samsung’s request last year were leaked on the web, containing some grainy photos of the original iPad’s prototype known as the ’035 mockup or prototype’. Today, detailed photos of the prototype alongside an iPad 2 have been published by Buzzfeed which suggest that the original iPad prototype was quite gigantic. The prototype has a thickness of around 1-inch while the screen size measures almost 13-inches diagonally.
The source says:
Revealed in court filings (which were first noticed by NetworkWorld) is a prototype/mock up (“035”) for an Apple tablet created between 2002 and 2004 — years before the iPad came out. It still looks like an iPad, but crossed with an old iBook. And man oh man it is HUGE. Here it is in full color for the first time.
Check out the iPad prototype photos along with their captions below:
And it’s nearly an inch thick, which would be way more awkward to hold than the current iPad’s .37-inches. (We’d also guess a fatter iPad is a heavier iPad.)
From every other angle, it looks crazy retro — but except for the fact it doesn’t have a home button, from the front it doesn’t look so different from the iPad we know and love, does it?
