DigiTimes has a new report this morning that indicates Apple may release three different versions of the second-generation iPad in 2011. The three versions would be a WiFi-only, WiFi with 3G, and WiFi with CDMA. Production is reportedly beginning in January.
Apple will ship about 500,000-530,000 units to channels in January with shipment ratio of Wi-Fi, UMTS and CDMA models at 3:4:3, according to industry sources, citing upstream component makers.
At this time, Apple offers two versions of the iPad, WiFi and WiFi+3G, in three different capacities of 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB. The 3G iPad has officially partnered with AT&T in the USA and Rogers/Bell/Telus in Canada.
If Apple were to offer a CDMA iPad, this would allow the iPad to be used with Verizon service in the USA and SaskTel/MTS/Public Mobile/Telus/Bell in Canada.
The launch of the second generation iPad is reportedly expected “by the end of the first quarter or the beginning of the second”. In other words, Spring 2011.
