New iPad “Smart Bezel” Patent, No Home Button On iPad 2?

by on February 17th, 2011

With iPad 2 rumors at an all-time high, and the possible imminent launch of the next-generation device, one of the major rumors have focused on possibly removing the Home Button from the iPad.

Earlier this year when Apple released four and five finger gestures for the iPad in the beta firmware, many were sure the Home Button was dead. But then we all forget that it is the Home Button that helps make the iPad so easy to use. Just push that one, singular button, and the iPad comes to life. Easy.

Today, Patently Apple has uncovered a new Apple patent detailing a “Smart Bezel”. The patent features a tablet device with the new bezel and the patent drawing does not include a home button! The patent describes some features for the “smart bezel” such as double-tapping the bezel to toggle the iPad on or off, controlling brightness and volume, and locking/unlocking the display.

So with this “Smart Bezel”, mixed with the iPad  four/five finger gestures, we may see the Home Button disappear after all!

That’s a pretty interesting idea. Obviously they would have to control accidental input because people hold it at the bezel.
Apple news gets me all hot and bothered.

    Here is a similar story

Back in Fall 2010 a patent from Apple detailing a new ‘Smart Bezel’ feature for the iPad emerged. This new bezel is said to be a touch-sensitive gesture area surrounding the iPad’s display. Now, with the iPad being rumored to lose the stationary home button, it would make sense that Apple would implement something similar to what is found in the ‘Smart Bezel’ patent.
