The iPad journey is almost here. Apple has seeded iPhone OS 3.2 SDK Gold Master, the final version. It is expected that iPhone and iPod Touch owners will eventually have download access to this latest iPhone OS. The latest download includes the following message:
Apple will provide you any iPad OS software updates that it may release from time to time, up to and including the next major iPad OS software release following the version of iPad OS software that originally shipped from Apple on your iPad, for free. For example, if your iPad originally shipped with iPad 3.x software, Apple would provide you with any iPad OS software updates it might release up to and including the iPad 4.x software release. Such updates and releases may not necessarily include all of the new software features that Apple releases for newer iPad models.
Legal accounting requirements result in iPod Touch owners to purchase iPhone OS upgrades. It looks like this could happen for iPad owners when they move to iPhone OS 5.x, but the next major upgrade, 4.x, will remain free.
With the cost of an iPad starting at $499, I would expect future upgrades to be free. However, it is possible that legal accounting requirements are once again getting in the way, since iPad owners are not paying a subscription service unlike its iPhone cousins.
What do you think? Should iPhone OS updates remain free forever for iPad users?
