A new report from Gartner states worldwide tablet sales are slated to reach 63.6 million units by the end of 2011, a 261.5% increase from last year (17.6 million). By the time 2015 rolls around forecasts predict over 325 million total tablet sales.
The iPad will account for 73.4% of worldwide tablet sales in 2011, slightly down from its 83% share in 2010, according to Gartner, with iOS and Android emerging as the dominant platforms. Still, Apple is set to absolutely crush the upcoming holiday season, according to Gartner researcher, Carolina Milanesi:
“We expect Apple to maintain a market share lead throughout our forecast period by commanding more than 50 percent of the market until 2014…This is because Apple delivers a superior and unified user experience across its hardware, software and services. Unless competitors can respond with a similar approach, challenges to Apple’s position will be minimal. Apple had the foresight to create this market and in doing that planned for it as far as component supplies such as memory and screen. This allowed Apple to bring the iPad out at a very competitive price and no compromise in experience among the different models that offer storage and connectivity options.”
She nailed it. Apple’s ‘superior and unified user experience’ thanks to iOS explains it all. As for Android?
“So far, Android’s appeal in the tablet market has been constrained by high prices, weak user interface and limited tablet applications…Google will address the fragmentation of Android across smartphone and tablet form factors within the next Android release, known as ‘Ice Cream Sandwich,’ which we expect to see in the fourth quarter of 2011. Android can count on strong support from key OEMs, has a sizeable developer community, and its smartphones application ecosystem is second only to Apple’s.”
Isn’t this what we’ve been hearing about Android tablets? We’re still waiting for a reasonable competitor to the iPad. The Playbook has fizzled after all its hype (no surprise here with RIM), the TouchPad has gone out of business (but those $99 sales are pretty cool!), and we continue to hear incessantly about tablet vapourware from Microsoft and others like Fusion Garage.
Apple is going to absolutely ‘kill it’ this holiday quarter. I can imagine the entire executive team laughing in the boardroom with lit cigars from their mouths, drinks in their hands, while burning endless fat stacks of hundred dollar bills. It’s going to be a wonderful Christmas.
