iPad Not Coming to Canada Until the End of May

by on April 14th, 2010

With the popularity of the iPad in the US, it seems Apple has been completely overwhelmed, and are already running out of stock in the US. This, of course, means they are having trouble getting ready for the international release. Sales have been higher than they expected, with over half a million units out the door already.

I’m sure some of these sales were not to US citizens. I was one of the numerous Canadians that traveled to the US to pick up an iPad, and I’m sure people from other countires “made arrangements” to get their iPad on the US launch day, as well.

This next bit will be frustrating for most Canadians wanting an iPad. Apple issued this press release today, explaining their situation:

Although we have delivered more than 500,000 iPads during its first week, demand is far higher than we predicted and will likely continue to exceed our supply over the next several weeks as more people see and touch an iPad™. We have also taken a large number of pre-orders for iPad 3G models for delivery by the end of April.

Faced with this surprisingly strong US demand, we have made the difficult decision to postpone the international launch of iPad by one month, until the end of May. We will announce international pricing and begin taking online pre-orders on Monday, May 10. We know that many international customers waiting to buy an iPad will be disappointed by this news, but we hope they will be pleased to learn the reason—the iPad is a runaway success in the US thus far.

So, there you have it. At least we have an official pre-order date, of May 10th, but it is a month later than we had hoped. As more and more people get to see and touch an iPad, the demand is only going to keep growing, so I would suggest jumping on that pre-order on May 10th, to ensure you get yours!

Damn! In hindsight, I should have headed south of the border to pick one up in the first week. If I had known that the Canadian release would lag by 2 months, I would have done so.

End of May = Monday May 31st (3 weeks after the Monday May 10 start of pre-ordering)
In other words, nearly 7 more weeks to wait in Canada <sigh>

anyone know where you can buy an Apple iPad Case in Canada?

  • VG

Well this really sucks, but I'm going to look on the bright side and say that at least (for once) Apple's being upfront about this and giving us actual dates to deal with. That's way better than waiting until the last minute and saying something like “The International release has been move to a later date. Details will be announced at a future date”.

I bet you this is because of the nasty Wifi issues they are having, read the apple forums it has almost 100,000 views and thousands of posts

That kinda sucks, and, most of all, puts it closer to the expected release of the HP Slate. I wouldn't call the HP Slate a iPad killer, but if both are arriving at the same time, I will definately have to check them both rather than simply jumping on the iPad.

If I buy a 3g model in the US at the end of the month will it work in Canada ?

  • rorypiper

Yes. All 3G iPads will be factory unlocked.

  • rorypiper

No. not yet. Probably not until end of May, now. :(

The loonie is above par right now and is expected to stay above par for the next three months so go ahead and buy one from the US.

Does anyone know what the steps and costs would be like to ship an iPad from the US to Canada?

  • John P

If you get an iPad from the US can you load the IPad apps ?

  • myname123

Thanks. Any idea what duty would cost to bring the ipad back from the US without staying in the US for several days? Where the closest store from Toronto… Buffalo?

  • Danny S

If you have a US iTunes account, yes.

Finally, what's the problem to go get an ipad in the US, the warranty??? What else could be a problem.
I'm sure if I have a problem with the ipad bought in US and ask for service in an Apple Boutique in Canada, there won't be any problem… What do you think??? Also, with the canadian dollar at par (???), and the fact that at the canadian border you will only pay GST and the provincial tax (for the province of Québec), that could be a good deal…

I'm thinking of going to Bellingham this weekend to get myself an Ipad. I live in Vancouver. So my question is how do I go about getting a US Itunes account??

    and a US iTunes card.

  • rorypiper

I depends on the border guard. I didn't pay any duty on mine, but I've heard of someone who had to pay $130!

  • rorypiper

Ha. Do you add “Sent from my iPad” to everything, now?!
