It seems that the iPad is going to introduce a new way to spell check.
On an iPhone or iPod Touch, spell checking happens in two ways. When a word is spelled incorrectly, the iPhone/iPod Touch will show a single suggestion that users can accept.
The second way is the iPhone/iPod Touch shows no suggestion and the word is spelled wrong. This prompts the user to manually navigate and fix the spelling.
The iPad has both of the aforementioned methods but also has one new way. The new spelling method is a hybrid spell checker and thesaurus. For example, in Safari, when users select a word, they get a new “Replace…” option.
So, for example, if a word is spelled incorrectly, users can highlight the word and receive a number of spelling choices (spell checker). If the word is spelled correctly, users receive the option to choose a number of similar words (thesaurus).
When you consider it, this feature is rather useful. I hope this is something standard in firmware 3.2, so that iPhone/iPod Touch users can also take advantage.
