by on March 7th, 2012

Apple has just released iOS 5.1 and it is available as an ‘over the air’ update. The update brings the following features, as a 199MB download:

  • Japanese language support for Siri
  • Photos can now be deleted from Photo Stream
  • Camera shortcut now always visible on Lock Screen for iPhone 4S, iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS and iPod touch (4th generation)
  • Camera face detection now highlights all detected faces
  • Redesigned Camera app for iPad
  • Genius Mixes and Genius playlists for iTunes Match subscribers
  • Audio for TV shows and movies on iPad optimized to sound louder and clearer
  • Podcast controls for playback speed and a 30-second rewind for iPad
  • Addresses bugs affecting battery life
  • Fixes an issue that occasionally caused audio to drop for outgoing calls

How to install this update? Go to Settings–General–Software Update and it should appear. You will need to plugin to a power source. Don’t forget to backup before you attempt the update.

Remember, if you have a jailbroken iPad 2–DO NOT update to iOS 5.1

I’d like to know how to delete individual pictures from the photo stream.  I don’t seem to see a way on my iPad or iPod.  Do you have to do it from iCloud.com?  I was hoping it could be done right from my iOS device.

Never mind, I figured it out.

Is it my imagination, or did iOS 5.1 buy me some extra hard drive space? Initially I couldn’t install OTA due to a requirement for 1G of free space. So I yanked some files and apps, but believe I got an extra 500M few after the update. I say believe because I didn’t write down the before and after space, but I think it was in this range.

    Anyone else see this?
