With the recent iOS Beta 2 release, the next generation iPad may include an automatic locking and unlocking system based on the presence of a case cover.
Found in the iOS 4.3 Beta 2 code for the Settings.app, two strings of code, and their associated value descriptions, indicate the following:
- Code: “PAD_CASE_LOCK”
Description: “iPad Cover Lock / Unlock,”
- Code: “PAD_CASE_LOCK_FOOTER.”
Description: “Automatically lock and unlock your iPad when you close and open the iPad cover.”
This data suggests that the second-generation iPad may use some type of proximity detection, for example from a new device proximity sensor. This new sensor/feature could potentially remove the “Slide to Unlock” function.
The question here is what is the “case” code and cover description referring to in regards to locking the device. Will there be a bundled Apple iPad case with device purchase, or will any case from third-party manufacturers also work?
So far, no rumors or product leaks have pointed to any included iPad case with device purchase. So could this iOS 4.3 code mean something?
