In the latest iPad killer news, a new report from DigiTimes says that Google and Asus are preparing to release a mutually developed 7-inch tablet in July. Reports indicate that initial shipments of the device should reach 600,000 units.
It’s reported that the 7-inch tablet will begin production shipments in June for a July launch. Apparently Google was going to release the tablet in May, but due to design problems and larger costs the device was delayed.
The price of the 7-inch Google tablet is unknown, however previous reports have indicated that the device would be priced in the lower end of the market. Such a decision was apparently made to compete with Amazon’s Kindle Fire.
As we get into the second half of 2012, Samsung, Asus, Acer, and Amazon all have actual and rumored 7-inch, or larger, tablet devices they will be shipping. In other words, this space will be highly competitive.
Whether Apple chooses to enter the 7-inch tablet market with a smaller device remains to be seen. However recent rumors point toward Apple releasing a smaller iPad later this year.
