There’s been some misleading information regarding the unlocked status of iPad 2 3G units. Currently, iPad 3Gs are unlocked in Canada, which means any carrier microSIM can be used to access data. Why would Apple change this with iPad 2 (in Canada on March 25th.)?
Rogers Confirms on Twitter: iPad 2 3G Models Will be Unlocked
With iPad 2, Apple clearly states the following on their website:
Choose your iPad by carrier.
If you decide on an iPad with Wi-Fi + 3G, be sure to select the model that corresponds with the carrier you’d like to use for 3G service. The iPad model you purchase is specially configured to work with either Bell, Rogers, or Telus. So while you don’t have to activate 3G service right away, you should choose your iPad with Wi-Fi + 3G according to the carrier you prefer.
When you decide to activate 3G data service, you can choose the amount of data per month you want to buy — with no long-term contract. So if you have a business trip or vacation approaching, just sign up for the month you’ll be travelling and cancel when you get back.
The first paragraph can be interpreted the iPad 2 3G can only be used on one carrier. But I believe it’s clear Apple is just explaining the iPad 2 3G can be used on any carrier with no long-term contract. The iPad 2 3G will be unlocked, so we shouldn’t worry.
Are you going to buy an iPad 2 3G or WiFi-only model?
Thanks to @BATsTM for the heads up!
