While this may sound a little too good to be true, Canadian textbooks are soon to make their way to your iPads as three Ontario-based firms are joining forces to offer a suite of digital services to textbook publishers in North America, Quill & Quire reports. A limited partnership of three companies constituting the AIC Publishing Services, has developed a working relationship with the U.S. firm Inkling who has already developed a publishing platform for the iPad which supports multimedia and interactive content.
AIC president Mike O’Hanlon explains:
“We primarily offer the capability of taking print products and converting them into products for the mobile space – that is, the iPad [or iPhone] – but doing it in such a fashion that we don’t simply create a digital page-for-page version of the printed book. We take the content and present it as is best suited for the medium being used.”
“One of the things we’re looking to do is put Canada into a leadership position in this area. We’re in a position of being one of the only North American sources of content for that product.”
Mike further said that because of the way the content can be constantly updated and renewed on iPad, it just makes way more sense to use it as a cost-effective teaching tool.
