Canadian-based iBookstore Approved by Canadian Government

by on December 15th, 2010

The Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official languages gave Apple the green light to proceed with a Canadian-based iBookstore.

In order for this approval, Apple had to agree to various conditions. You can probably guess what these would be if you’re Canadian: a focus on Canadian authors in both French/English, opportunities for Canadian publishers/authors, Aboriginal authors, and more.

“Our Government is committed to strengthening Canada’s economy through all its sectors, especially arts and culture,” said Minister Moore. “Apple has demonstrated how iBookstore Canada represents new opportunities for Canadian authors and publishers, and I have determined that this investment will be of net benefit to Canada.”

The iBookstore right now lacks the popular content that Canadians crave. I agree that there should be a subsection dedicated to Canadian authors and such, but a purely Canadian iBookstore seems unnecessary. Give people what they want to read! It doesn’t matter where it has to be from as long as its worthwhile.

What do you think? Yay or nay for a Canadian-based iBookstore?

They are basically forcing Apple to promote writers that would ordinarily never even get the time of day from an agent, let alone a publisher. I am SO glad I managed to get a US iTunes account…

Finally able to get some valued literature. A good book doesn’t mean it has to be on the Oprah list.
