Can the Apple iPad Make Emergency Calls?!

by on March 3rd, 2010

We’ve seen the iPad simulator via the SDK. We’ve also heard about rumours of a camera being included with the iPad. Well, it looks like GumBall Tech has stumbled across an interesting feature in the iPad SDK. It looks like the iPad will be able to make emergency calls. Say what?! I thought the iPad didn’t have a calling feature?

Some indicate that this functionality might have been included to satisfy FCC regulations that require all wireless “phones” to have capabilities to make emergency calls. If this is true, you can pretty much guarantee that once the iPad is jailbroken, someone will figure out a way to make voice calls using WiFi or the data plan (there’s always Skype too!).

The above was easily achieved by enabling a passcode lock, and then entering it incorrectly about 5 times. You can then slide for a emergency call.

What do you think? Will we see emergency calls on the iPad?

There's already a solution(in the appstore) to making calls on an iPad over WIFI or 3G. It's called VOIP and there's nothing stopping the iPad from using it(skype or other apps) unless Apple restricts VOIP applications for the iPad.
