Apple Updates iPad 3G Carriers, Removes Fido

by on March 24th, 2011

In early March, we reported that on the Canadian Apple site for the iPad 3G, Fido was listed as an available carrier.

This prompted the question if Fido was planning on releasing data plans for iPad, since Fido was not an official carrier for the original iPad.

As we arrive on iPad 2 launch eve, Apple has now updated their website and removed Fido as an available carrier. After this change, we are back to the original carriers; Rogers, Bell, and Telus. The plans for these carriers are listed:

Rogers/Bell

  • 250MB: $15/month
  • 5GB: $35/month

Telus

  • 500MB: $20.00/month (no way to cap @ 500MB; users must monitor usage at TelusMobility.com)
  • 5GB: $50.00/month (maximum paid per month)

While not listed in Apple Stores, Virgin Mobile also has an iPad data plan:

Virgin Mobile

  • 500MB: $20.00/month Flex Data (if data exceeds 500MB, the customer is automatically moved to $35/month)
  • 5GB: $35.00/month Flex Data (if data exceeds 5GB, customer is charged $0.015 cents per additional MB)

Thanks to Cody for the heads-up!

So… Virgin and Telus offer the same packages… Anyone knows which of them offers better 3G coverage/speed in Quebec city ?

    Telus, for sure.

They run off the same network. Bell and Telus share the 3G+ network, and Virgin uses Bells portion… therefore, the same.

    Thanks for the comments

    I was mistaken… 5Gb costs $50 with Telus while it’s $35 with Virgin.
    I’ll go Virgin!

And no one in Canada complains this sort of pricing as PRICE FIXING amongst the carriers?????

On March 25, 2011 @ 7:30 AM PDT, Apple is still showing Fido as a carrier on http://www.apple.com/ca/ipad/3g/

Not on the purchase page though.

    Here it is: http://www.rogers.com/web/content/ipad-dataplans?cm_mmc=Redirects-_-Consumer_Wireless_Eng-_-iPad_PrelaunchDataPlans_0510-_-iPad

The problem with Rogers flex plan is that you need to notify them 30 days in advance of cancelation, so it is minimum 2 months. I still think it is better than Virgin plan (almost identical pricing) since The Rogers 3G coverage is better is many areas of Canada.
