The Wall Street Journal is reporting sources have told them Apple is set to announce iPad-optimized textbooks at its upcoming media event this Thursday set to take place in New York City:
McGraw-Hill has been working with Apple on its announcement since June, a person familiar with the matter said. It wasn’t known whether Pearson and Houghton Mifflin also would participate.
Cengage Learning, one of the world’s largest higher-education textbook publishers, has partnered with Apple in the past and will be attending the event. The company declined to say what its role is in Apple’s announcement this week.
It was mentioned in the Steve Jobs biography that the $8 billion dollar textbook industry was ‘ripe for digital destruction’. The announcement of textbooks for the iPad would be huge as it would bring a whole new level of interaction. Steve Jobs stated in his biography students today currently carry the burden of lugging heavy books in their bags to and from school. Textbooks on your iPad could change all of that. Stay tuned!
