Apple Selling 25,000 iPads An Hour?

by on March 12th, 2010

Today is a significant day for Americans looking to purchase the iPad. Why? The answer lies that today is the day preorders are available! People have been ordering so many iPads that Apple order numbers according to Investor Village’s AAPL Sanity Board claims the number of 25,000 per hour.

Members at Investor Village’s AAPL Sanity Board have begun entering the order numbers associated with their purchases into a Google spreadsheet.

By 11:05am EST the group had received 15 confirmations with order numbers reaching 74,000. The iPad went up for pre-order at 08:30 EST.

“51,000 orders in two hours,” announced Victor Castroll an analyst with Valcent Financial Group. His estimate takes into account roughly 15,000 non-iPad orders that come in every day.

Silicon Alley Insider posted a similar 20,000-per-hour figure based on two sales made 30 minutes apart whose order numbers differed by 10,000

According to the spreadsheet, 25% pre-ordered Wi-Fi + 3G models and 25% ordered the largest, 64 GB model. A quarter of them also ordered two iPads.

Want to contribute? Email ipadsales10@gmail.com and include:
-your last three digits of your order number
-number of ipads ordered
-time zone, order time, HD size, model

You can bet Canadians will be preordering and driving down to the States to pick theirs up from Apple
Stores. Anyone doing that? It’s like the iPhone craziness all over again but on a smaller level.

The important number is what this stabilizes out to and what the rate is after a week or so.

Personally – I don't think we'll see the “Ma and Pa Public” types entering the iPad fray until the device is out and people get to hold one in their own hands. That will be the true test of how popular this device is destined to become.

For now, I think what we're witnessing is the pent up demand from the technophiles – the typical early adopters. (Like you and I).

I agree with Cityhues, it's the stable number that maters. After the hype created over the last month and a half over the iPad, the initial sales are obviously going to be crazy. I think it will settle down in the 5,000-10,000 iPads per hour.

Of course when the iPad is released in Canada, the same thing will happen but in somewhat lower numbers.
