As iPad preorders have become available, information regarding the device and the iBooks application has begun to be made available.
Apple has updated its iPad Features area on the iPad web page with a new page dedicated to the iBooks application. The iBooks app, which is Apple’s eReader application and access point to the iBookstore, should be available to Canadians shortly after the iPad Canada launch, but for now the app is USA only.
In the last few weeks, information about the iBooks app and iBookstore has been scarce, but the updated online feature page reveals a more in-depth look at the app. To begin, Apple has confirmed that the iBooks app will support the open ePub standard, allowing users to import any open ePub content into iTunes and their iPad.
The iBooks features page further details numerous features available within the iBooks app, such as the ability to view single-page portrait and double-page landscape modes by rotating the iPad. Additional features include options to change text sizes and fonts.
Users can further tap on words within an eBook to reveal definitions for the word using the iPad dictionary, Wikipedia, or the web. Apple’s VoiceOver functionality is also compatible with the iBooks app, allowing content to be read aloud.
