Apple: No iPad 2 Keyboard Dock, Use Soft Keyboard

by on March 25th, 2011

For the iPad 2 launch, Apple launched some Apple-branded accessories such as the Smart Cover, HDMI cable, and new Dock. For the original iPad, Apple launched a keyboard dock, which was not refreshed for the iPad 2.

Wondering what’s up, a 9to5Mac reader emailed Apple Senior Vice President of Marketing:

From what I’ve heard, the Apple keyboard dock is not made for the iPad 2. Is there an iPad 2 version that I can’t find on your online store – or is it coming soon?

While Schiller does not directly answer the question, he does indicate that Apple may not be releasing a new keyboard dock for the iPad 2.

Schiller’s reply:

People prefer to use the iPad’s built in soft keyboard most all of the time, it works very well. Those that do choose to use an external keyboard most often choose to use Apple’s bluetooth wireless keyboard for the convenience it provides.

So there we go. Soft keyboard wins.

Schiller suggested a bluetooth keyboard, and you say the soft keyboard wins?

Basically, what he’s saying is that the dock/keyboard wasn’t selling well, and if you need one you can use a Bluetooth keyboard.

Do you know anyone that actually bought a keyboard/dock? I don’t know anyone that did.

I did it and it works very well.

iPad2 works perfectly with original keyboard/dock – tested.
