We have already seen tons of rumors suggesting how Apple might launch an iPad 3 by the end of this year with an HD / Retina display. But when you think about it, it doesn’t make much sense for a company to bring a new product at a time when the old one is still “killing the competition”. Majority of the original iPad owners have just upgraded to iPad 2 with millions of other first time iPad owners also joining in. So if Apple announces an iPad 3 now, it will make all these buyers absolutely furious. Not to mention, iPad 2 still being a hot selling Apple product, sold over 9 million units during the last quarter alone.
According to MacRumors, an analyst named Mark Moskowitz believes that prototypes for Apple’s iPad 3 are already in the supply chain but the actual product won’t make it to the stores until later half of 2012:
Analyst Mark Moskowitz with J.P. Morgan revealed on Friday that his conversations with industry insiders have revealed that Apple’s next iPad will not be available until sometime in 2012, even as prototypes for the device begin to circle in the supply chain.
“In our view, Apple should be in no rush,” he said. “The other tablet entrants have stumbled so far, and that trend-line could persist deep into 2012″
As compared to sky rocketing sales of the iPad, RIM shipped only 200,000 PlayBook tablets during its second fiscal quarter with no record indicating how many of those shipments actually translated into sales. Thus it seems highly unlikely that we’ll be seeing the iPad 3 this year, but instead we should expect the next generation of Apple tablet to arrive some time in 2012.
