I suppose it was bound to happen at one time or another. Apple is being threatened with a lawsuit over the use of the iPad trademark name in China.
According to the Financial Times article the now near bankrupt company called Proview launched a tablet computer called I-Pad in 2000 and had registered the trademark at that time. Unfortunately the product flopped and the company’s assets are now being seized because of default of payment on a $400 million loan.
Apple has actually launched a lawsuit (this one is not just a threat) against Proview and a preliminary injunction prevents Proview from trying to sell the trademark to a third party.
Am I worried about the “threat” against Apple. Not really. Apple may end up paying some amount of $ to buy the trademark back but chances are the Proview lawsuit against Apple will never become a reality since the potential gains probably don’t outweigh costs for them (they are basically bankrupt, after all).
I may be proven wrong, but I suspect things will be settled out of court. I guess we can only wait and see how things develop.
