Due to the success of the iPad, Apple accounted for 17.2 percent of all mobile PC shipments worldwide during Q4 of 2010. This statistic makes Apple the segment worldwide leader in mobile PC devices.
In Q4 2010, Apple reportedly shipped 10.2 million MacBook computers and iPad devices, topping the closest competitor, HP, by almost one million units.
One of the main reasons for this success is being attributed to the Apple’s first-to-market strategy with the iPad, as the device was unopposed for almost a year before any major competition appeared in late 2010.
With Apple’s 17 percent year-over-year growth in the mobile PC industry, only Apple and Toshiba saw year-over-year growth between 2009 and 2010. However, Apple played no small part in the overall industry growth, as once tablet shipments are removed, mobile PC shipments only saw a 1 percent increase when compared to 2009.
Combined, the top five brands accounted for 65 percent of total mobile PC shipments during the fourth quarter of 2010.
