Apple Advertises Job For iPad Camera Engineer

by on April 15th, 2010

This is going to hurt. Badly.

Back in February, a job posting on Apple’s job website was spotted advertising a position for a camera engineer for the iPad. It seems that even today, after the iPad launch, the position still remains to be filled or is being used to bring on more people. Check out the description:

Job title   Performance QA Engineer, iPad Media

Country   United States

City   Cupertino

Job description

The Interactive Media Group (IMG) provides the media and graphics foundation across all of Apple’s innovative products, including iPhone, iPad, apple TV, iPod, iTunes, and Mac OS. Combining cutting-edge software techniques with next-generation hardware, IMG takes the media experience to the next level.

The Media Systems team is looking for a software quality engineer with a strong technical background to test still, video and audio capture and playback frameworks. Build on your QA experience and knowledge of digital camera technology (still and video) to develop and maintain testing frameworks for both capture and playback pipelines.

I think we all remember the hundreds of rumors surrounding the iPad and whether it would receive a front-facing or back-facing camera. Ultimately, a camera did not make its appearance on the iPad, but a camera is expected to show up in the next generation iPad.

Hardware rumors aside, even iPhone OS 4.0 and the iPad SDK point to video calling references. While the former of these references are intended for the iPhone device, they could very well debut on the iPad as well.

If your suspicions were ever in doubt about an iPad camera, that on-going job posting basically confirms it. Not only will there be a camera in the next iPad, but Apple is already testing one.

Having a camera accessory at the bottom makes no sense (unless you want to shoot your chin). And having to flip the device upside down to have it at the top is stupid too. The camera needs, and I'm sure it will be, right in the top middle of the iPad.
