It was reported last week Amazon had send out press invites for a news conference to be held this Wednesday, and now it appears TechCrunch has learned the announcement will involve a new tablet rival, to be known as the ‘Kindle Fire’.
The new Kindle Fire will be a 7″ backlit tablet similar in design to the RIM PlayBook, as it was built by the same manufacturer. It will run a customized version of Android to run Amazon’s own custom Android app store, and the tablet will reportedly stream content via various deals with Fox, reports AllThingsD.
As for hardware it will contain a TI dual-core OMAP chip, the same chip inside the PlayBook and used within the latest Android devices. The price of the device is rumoured to retail somewhere between $250-300.
Can 7-inch tablets survive in this market? Given the vast Amazon library available for ebooks, music, and this rumoured media service I think it will work for those in the market for a smaller device, but still, it won’t be an iPad.
