If you waited in line for an iPad and purchased one, you may be part of the overall opening day iPad sales numbers. According to Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster, Apple’s opening day sales of the iPad are around 600k-700k. This is a staggering number considering the pace at which Apple’s iPhones sold at.
How did Apple manage to do this? Through their master marketing plan which included spots on Modern Family, David Letterman, and the Grammys. What surprises me is that Apple has been able to keep pace with the incredible iPad demand. I just spoke with a friend down in Seattle and he told me the Apple Store there still had all models available.
Here’s a short note from Digital Daily:
In a research note issued Sunday morning, Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster — who’d expected Apple (AAPL) to sell between 200,000 and 300,000 iPads on Saturday — said his prediction was likely off by more than half.
“We estimate Apple sold between 600-700k iPads (including online pre-orders which started on March 12th) on the first day (4/3),” he wrote. “It took Apple three days to sell a million iPhone 3GS and iPhone 3G’s, and 74 days to sell 1m original iPhones.”
I will have some iPad unboxing pictures later this week when my iPad arrives.
