Earlier today, we mentioned that Apple held a conference call, where they reported record numbers this weekend, with the release of the new iPad (I’m still calling it iPad 3). With Apple Stores still not sold out, there was some suspicion that maybe Apple’s latest device wasn’t selling quite as fast as they thought. Well, it turns out they were just really more prepared this time.
In a recent press release at Apple.com, Apple has announced that they have sold over 3 million units of the new iPad since March 16th (launch day). This is truly an incredible number, if you consider the first iPad only sold about 300,000 units it’s opening weekend. That’s 10X the amount, in just the 3rd generation of the product. Contributing to the higher numbers, is the fact that Apple has released the new iPad in more countries than previous initial launches, but the numbers are still staggering. Some reports are saying that it costs Apple approximately $320 to make a new iPad, so you can imagine the profit they are making on these.
Here’s an excerpt from the press release:
“The new iPad is a blockbuster with three million sold―the strongest iPad launch yet,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing. “Customers are loving the incredible new features of iPad, including the stunning Retina display, and we can’t wait to get it into the hands of even more customers around the world this Friday.”
This Friday will most likely break even more records, as Apple launches the new iPad in a bunch more countries. The new iPad is a hit.
